I had been commissioned by Thierry Barbé and the French Double Bass Association to compose a piece for the final Master Exam at the Conservatoire Supérieur de Musique de Paris. The major theme of this Recital was about Beethoven, and I had to deal with this huge reference!!!

It’s the roaring of the bass’ fugato in the 3rd movement of his 5th Symphony which activate the writing of the 1rst Bagatelle. Despite a rather static harmony, the 1rst Bagatelle allows flows among instruments, intertwining of phrases through a crescendo opening a short but intense Double Bass’ cadence.

The second has been inspired by the slow and ecstatic movement of his 5th Piano Concerto, but a very distant influence on dissonances. If the rubbings can create a certain melodic tension, they only are the first move towards a reserved caress. The nine letters of the name of Beethoven are hold into the 3rd Bagatelle whose reference is one of the Alto and Bassoon Duos by Philippe Hersant.

The 4th Bagatelle uses the “Hymne à la joie” theme but in unison, transposed and reversed. It also includes a Double Bass Cadence in which, mystery of composers’ imagination, the Bass’ roarings in the Berlioz “Scene aux champs” are resonating like a far-off echo…

Finally it’s the frenzied dance spirit of the last movements of Beethoven’s Piano Concertos who pushed me into the 5th Bagatelle, even if with it aksaks rhythms, the Bartok souvenir isn’t very far…
